4d. Bifold Greeting Card: Alternative Artist Collection: Ida Rentoul Outhwaite: “The Little Witch”

A 5×7 greeting card on glossy cardstock paper, featuring the original 1916 illustration in Public Domain called “The Little Witch,” by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite.

The front of this greeting card features a color illustration of a delicately featured witch, standing on a hillside, with the wind behind her, her dark and curly untamed hair, green cloak with black and white checkered lining, and pale brown dress, are billowing out in front and behind her as she faces the spires of a village far in the distance down below. She is wearing a black pointed hat, and a black cat is at her feet while she clutches a broomstick perhaps preparing to take off! A dark gnarly tree looms behind her as bats fly overhead, and as a toad perches on a little toadstool mushroom not far from her feet. The official title of the piece is The Little Witch, but on the bottom of the card is printed on the original illustration “The Witch.”

Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, 1888-1960, was a self-taught illustrator & author of several children’s books & collections of poetry about fairies, witches, magical creatures, & the wild animals of Australia, which was the land she called home.
